SCOLA Specialized Video Word Search is a searchable collection of English Language/ Native Language word pairs that allow you to build your vocabulary by hearing examples of words in actual usage in video broadcasts as well as audio pronunciation sound clips.

Login. Select the Specialized Word Video Search icon from the SCOLA homepage.

Begin search by pressing “Word Search” on the menu bar. Searches can be specified by language, country, or term. (Lexicon Search and Advanced Search options also available – see below).

Search by language by selecting the language from the list and pressing the “submit query” button.

Search by country by selecting the desired country from the list and clicking “submit query.”

Search for a term by typing in an English word/phrase -- e.g. ” Nuclear capabilities” or using the script of the language you are searching for e.g. القدرات النووية. (Arabic for Nuclear Capabilities). Then click “submit query.” After this, a return set will display with the results of your search.

View results by page by pressing the green arrow to move between pages.

Modify your search criteria by selecting the “Change Criteria” button located under your search results.

To view video, select the blue hyperlink on the English word. This will take you to the player page. The player page displays all words associated with this particular clip. Note that the selected term is highlighted.

The Video Player head will track with the words. This works two ways. If you select a word from the displayed list, the player head will move to four seconds before the time position of the word. As you play the video, a larger display of the word will be next to the player. As the player head passes the time of the word, the word will highlight. The larger version will be displayed for four seconds after the word occurs. The other way this works is to start the player. As it gets close to a point in the video that has word data, it will display a larger version of the word pair next to the player as above. It will continue to step through the words as the timeline progresses. You can go back to a word any time by clicking on the word in the listing.

One way to use this is to play the pronunciation file using the white arrow in the blue circle next to the word. Listen and repeat the word from the clear pronunciation. Then play the video clip for that word. You will find you have ‘pre-tuned’ your ear for that sound and will be able to differentiate it more easily from its surrounding sounds.

From this page you may also download the video clip, download all of the audio pronunciation files in a zip file, and print out a hard copy of the wordlist associated with this clip. When printing a hard copy, select utf-8 encoding to be sure the language scripts display correctly.

Lexicon search allows a search to be conducted by letter. It will display all of the English words of the word pair starting with a letter. For example, one can look at a list of Chinese vocabulary where the English word starts with the letter “D.”

Select Lexicon Search at the top of the page.

Select a language, then a letter. Your search results will be displayed.

Hear the pronunciation of the word by selecting the button with the white arrow.

Download the word by selecting the disk icon.

Navigate through your results by pressing the green arrows.

Modify your search criteria by selecting the “Change Criteria” button located under the results.

Advanced Search Options are available for both Word Search and Lexicon search, allowing one to further define and filter a query. You may filter for category, broadcast type, and broadcast date. Searches may be limited by one or more of these criteria. Note that there is not programming in every language for every date.

This could be utilized if you were looking for a particular video file or for videos from a particular time range. If you have trouble getting results try widening your search.

Filter by category by selecting the category from the menu. Hit the “Submit Query” button to return results.

Filter by broadcast type by selecting from the menu. Hit the “Submit Query” button to return results.

Filter by broadcast date by entering a start date (mm/dd/yyyy) and end date (mm/dd/yyyy). Hit the “Submit Query” button to return results.
